Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
