Ghostface OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Franchise with Scream 7.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a character you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Return for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a small cameo is a long-held wish, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he received the news from the series creator.
"I remember the conversation. I remember the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie premiered, which made Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now represented in each and every Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.
"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the film will be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While many longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way still living in a bizarre communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
