Meteorologists are reporting a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Go Ahead In Spite of Forecasts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay events are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be essential," stated the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks shows, with no rain and clear skies. The mercury are forecast to be low, so additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Travelers are advised to allow extra time for travel on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on the transport network.

The Mercury Expected to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Released

In addition, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather was expected to trigger major effects across medical and care provision. This involves a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in security, wrapping up warm is completely essential.
