Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in 1931, Burton became one of the industry’s most admired broadcasters, bringing the wonder of classical music to the wider audience.
He served as the BBC’s head of music and arts during the 1960s and 1970s, receiving awards for programmes such as The Golden Ring.
1978 saw him pioneer the Young Musician of the Year, a competition instrumental in identifying future stars including violinist Nicola Benedetti.
