The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Become a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
An new acronym emerged several months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors including paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for physicians to treat a young patient who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.
A Living Nightmare Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Gaza remains hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs assert that violations are still being committed. The Israeli government rejects these allegations, consistent with how it disavows everything it is implicated in. Yet as young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, apparently, is what global togetherness resembles.
The contest, notably excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that initially championed togetherness has transformed into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
