The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. This serves as a powerful symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
In time, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to victory and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, after being sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
