The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
