The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

When an teenage makes club history in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a last eight place.

At 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great stamina, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the team pursue future success.

After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
